Last year there was a glaring omission from Apple’s release schedule, every year there is an update to Apples larger tablet, the Air range. This is usually in the summer at the WWDC (World Wide Developers Conference). Last year there was no such announcement, so everyone looked towards the now traditional September event that usually announces the latest iPhone range. What surprised everyone was that the iPad announcement was for a completely new product in the range, the iPad Pro.
When will it be available?
Fast forward to 2016 and rumours persist that there will be an iPad Air 3 sometime this year. Ming-Chi Kuo a well respected analyst from KGI Securities hints at a release in the first half of the year. Having said that rumours of a March 2016 don’t seem to go away. Apple released the original iPad and the next 2 generations at March events so it is possible they could do the same this year. Expect first deliveries approximately 10 days after announcement.
What will it look like?
Rumours around the internet suggest that the Air 3 will be an evolution of the existing Air 2 design but thinner and lighter, which would be a mighty task considering the compact dimensions of the Air 2.
Expect it to also be available in Rose gold, as this would line it up with other new Apple products such as the iPhone 6S.
What about the Tech Specs?
As usual there will be more powerful processors, most likely in the form of an A9X chip. And improved graphics capabilities. Some rumours suggest the screen will get 3D touch, but others say that this has been dropped due to production difficulties on a screen that size. I expect that the Air 3 probably won’t get 3D touch. The Air could also get a boost in screen resolution to 4K.
Should I wait for it?
If there is no rush to buy then I would recommend waiting as it should be a good step up from the current one. As there doesn’t seem to be any concrete evidence of a release date, if buying an iPad is a more urgent matter then I suggest not to wait as it could be as late as Autumn for an announcement.
