Samsung revealed the new Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge range at MWC 2016. Screen size remains a 5.1 inch screen, flat compared to the new S7 edge which has a 5.5 inch display which creates a greater difference between the models. This should actually make the decision of which to buy much easier than with the previous generation. The S7 Edge’s curved screen makes it the better looking phone in my opinion. The phone is only available with 32GB of onboard storage.
Samsung have reintroduced expandable storage to the range with a clever two in one SIM tray that houses the SIM and also a microSD card up to 128GB in size.
The S7 is water and dust resistant with IP68 rated up to 1.5m underwater
A new potentially useful feature is an Always on screen to display items such as time, date and calendar plus other features. Very handy for quickly checking the time or your next appointment. Battery life isn’t affected too much either, Samsung say it only uses one percent battery power per hour, but it can be turned off if you want.
Camera has less but larger pixels than the S6, with a 12 megapixel sensor with a larger f1.7 aperture. This should offer better low light pictures. Dual pixel technology borrowed from dedicated cameras and DSLR’s should also provide faster auto focus, something that was a bit of an issue on previous Galaxy S’s.
Samsung haven’t mentioned the exact processor but they have mentioned that there will be two different models for different regions. The UK and US will be getting an octa-core (2.3Ghz quad, 1.6Ghz quad) 64-Bit processor. According to Samsung that’s a 30 percent CPU performance improvement over the S6 and 64 percent improvement for the GPU.
Smaller battery than the S7 Edge due to its smaller size at 3,000mAh, Samsung say the CPU has better power management, we’ll have to wait and see what the battery is like.
Samsung are clearly trying to entice casual gamers with a new app called Game Launcher. There are plenty of extra features such as recording gameplay with picture in picture of the gamers expressions via the front camera. Samsung have even added water cooling and a mini heatsink in the phone to managed the heat generated from the CPU and GPU when stressed during games.
